HelaIsMoney — The Chama Goes Digital

The chama is the foundational financial institution of Kenya. Not the bank, not the SACCO, not the mobile money platform — the chama. The informal rotating savings and credit group, usually twelve to thirty members, meeting monthly, collecting contributions, making loans, building capital for members who would otherwise have no access to formal financial infrastructure.

There are an estimated 300,000 chamas operating in Kenya. Their combined assets are estimated by the Capital Markets Authority at over 300 billion Kenya shillings. They operate almost entirely outside the formal financial system, on trust, social accountability, and handwritten ledgers.

What HelaIsMoney Solves

HelaIsMoney is a chama management tool built natively for the M-Pesa ecosystem. It digitises the ledger, automates contribution tracking, manages loan records, calculates interest, generates meeting reports, and produces the financial statements that a chama needs to access formal credit.

The gap between the chama sector’s actual financial weight — 300 billion shillings, 300,000 groups — and its access to formal financial products is entirely a data infrastructure problem. Chamas cannot produce the financial history that formal lenders require because their records are informal. HelaIsMoney is the bridge from informal record to formal evidence. It does not change what the chama is. It makes what the chama already is legible to institutions that require legibility before they extend capital.

M-Pesa payment confirmation messages are parsed automatically into the ledger. Members receive SMS confirmations. The chairperson generates monthly PDF reports. The tool runs on a web interface optimised for low-end smartphones. No app download required.
